Use Risk CalculatorForex Trading Glossary
Essential terms every trader should know before entering the markets.
Pip
The smallest standardised price move in forex. Equal to 0.0001 for most pairs and 0.01 for JPY pairs. A 10-pip move on EUR/USD from 1.0800 = 1.0810.
Lot Size
Trade volume in forex. 1 Standard Lot = 100,000 units. 1 Mini Lot = 10,000. 1 Micro Lot = 1,000. Cent accounts trade in 1,000-unit lots.
Leverage
Ratio of your position size to your margin. At 1:500, $200 controls $100,000. Magnifies both gains and losses equally.
Spread
The difference between the bid and ask price. This is the transaction cost on Standard accounts. ECN accounts add a small commission instead.
Swap / Rollover
Interest charged or credited for holding a position overnight. Swaps depend on the interest rate differential between two currencies in a pair.
Margin Call
Triggered when your free margin falls below a set threshold (120% at STWFX). The broker notifies you to deposit more funds or reduce exposure.
Stop Out
If margin level drops to 50% (STWFX level), the broker auto-closes your least profitable positions to protect remaining equity.
ECN
Electronic Communication Network. Orders are matched directly with liquidity providers — tightest spreads, no dealing desk intervention, fastest execution.
Slippage
When your order fills at a different price than expected, often during news events. STWFX's no-rejection, no-requote policy minimises this on ECN accounts.
